It is the time of year when I add extra time to my driving trips that take me through the countryside. Not because of traffic or antiquing, but to stop at the farmers markets and farm stands that sell quality and locally produced goods.
It is a win-win-win situation. I have access to food that is picked just hours before I make my purchase, I’m supporting the local community, and it enables the farmers to form relationships with me, often offering recipes using their bounty and talking about their farming practices.
I am not alone in my desire to shop at these markets and stands. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as of mid-2011, there were 7,175 farmers markets operating in the U.S., a 17 percent increase from 2010. To see the rest of this column and recipes, please click here
